The permanent residence permit in compliance with §18c AufenthG depends on a number of conditions. If you are a holder of a residence permit for professionals, you can apply for the permanent permit after 21, 24, 33 or 48 months – depending on your type of residence permit. In addition, you must have the financial means to sustainably cover your living expenses. You should provide a work contract that is valid for an unlimited period of time or at least one more year and you should no longer be in the probationary period.

Main requirements:

• In posession of a residence permit in accordance with §§ 18a, 18b or 18d AufenthG for 4 years
  • Professional with German degree (vocational training or university degree): 2 years
  • Blue card holder:
    • Option 1: 33 months (language skills A1)
    • Option 2: 21 months (language skills B1)

• Current qualified Employment
• 48 months of compulsory or voluntary contributions to the statutory pension insurance system
  • Professional with German degree (vocational training or university degree): 24 months
  • Blue card holder:
    • Option 1: 33 months  (language skills A1)
    • Option 2: 21 months (language skills B1)

• Sufficient knowledge of the German language (B1)
• Sufficient financial means (including health insurance)
• Sufficient housing
• No criminal record

• 1 new biometric passport photo
• Valid passport & copies (data sheet, entry visa, stamps, labels)
• Current health insurance membership certificate, not older than 3 months (no chip card)
• Current proof of residence (housing form from the Potsdam Foreigners' Registration Office (Öffnet in einem neuen Tab), filled out and stamped by the homeowner/landlord, homeowners must submit an excerpt from the land register)
• Residence registration from the City Hall (Bürgerservice)
• Joint declaration of marriage (Öffnet in einem neuen Tab) for one another (one form per spouse)
• Current employment contract (should be valid for at least one year, no probation)
• Last 12 salary statements
• Current employer's certificate of employment, if applicable, for an unlimited period of time
• Pension insurance record (Rentenversicherungsverlauf)
• Proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language (appropriate test certificate: “Zertifikat Integrationskurs”, Goethe-Institut, telc GmbH, ÖSD, TestDAF, ECL, DSH, DSD)
